White Saviorism in Sea Rescue Activism

SOLIDARITY IS NOT ENOUGH!
Critical reflection series on the situation at the Mediterranean Sea

White saviorism refers to a white person who provides help to non-white people in a self-serving manner. It refers to western people assuming that they can fix the problems of struggling nations or people of color without understanding their history, needs, the region and people’s current and future state of affairs.

As a civil sea rescue organization, SOS Mediterranee aims to take responsibility where European states fail to do so: The Central Mediterranean Sea. Being the deadliest migrant route in the world, together with other organizations we took it upon ourselves to rescue and save lives in the sea. But what does this mean and how can we do better?

Always and especially in today’s times of crisis it is important that those in privileged positions learn to do better.

What is genuine solidarity and when is moral superiority assumed by “helping”?

How can we unpack the colonial narrative of the “White Man’s Burden”?

When do white people “help” in a self-serving way?

What role does empathy and humbleness play in white activism?

When is “help” actually dehumanizing?

These and other questions will be discussed during the event.

Das zentrale Mittelmeer ist die tödlichste Fluchtroute der Welt. Auch, weil sich die europäischen Staaten ihrer gesetzlichen Pflicht und moralischen Verantwortung, Menschen in Seenot vor dem Tod zu bewahren, entziehen. Zivile Seenotrettungsorganisationen füllen seit Jahren diese Lücke, so auch SOS Mediterranee. Menschen retten, schützen und all ihre Geschichten an eine breite Öffentlichkeit tragen, das ist unsere Mission. Doch reicht unsere Solidarität? Das fragen wir uns als Freiwillige von SOS Mediterranee häufig. Wie können wir wirklich etwas bewegen? Wie können wir über Dinge sprechen, die wir selbst nie erlebt haben, vielleicht nie erleben werden? Welchen politischen Standpunkt nehmen wir in unserer Arbeit ein und was kann daran problematisch sein? Oder besser: Wie weiß ist unser Aktivismus?

Wir laden euch ein, gemeinsam mit uns über diese Dinge nachzudenken, zu reflektieren und zu sprechen. Es geht um Leben und Tod, Solidarität und Macht, Zivile Seenotrettung und Flucht: Willkommen zu unserer Soli-Reihe, wir freuen uns auf euch!
