Four days ago the crew of Ocean Viking was able to take 39 people in distress on board in a difficult rescue operation in heavy swell. The people had fled from the violence in Libyan torture camps and the battles of the civil war. They had to wait three days for a port of safety as the weather worsened until last night, when news arrived that Ocean Viking was allowed to set sail for the port of Pozallo, Sicily.
Despite the Malta agreement, ships continue to regularly wait several days for the assignment of a port of safety. This is a time when ships could already be back in the search and rescue zone and save people from drowning. This practice continues to endanger human lives and must stop!
