27. June 2020 Ocean Viking rescues 118 people

Yesterday the Ocean Viking rescued 118 people from distress at sea. Without the civilian rescue ship, the people would have drowned or been illegally returned to Libya. We are happy for all the people who were rescued and we demand that the rescue ship is soon assigned a port of safety.
Germany will take over the EU Council Presidency next week and will probably tighten asylum laws further in the coming months. Nevertheless, we will not get tired of continuing to demand state sea rescue, safe entry routes and an end to the cooperation with criminal Libyan militias.
As long as this does not happen, people in distress at sea will be dependent on civilian forces. We condemn the persecution and obstruction of rescuers by EU states such as Germany and Italy.
