The Trapani prosecutor’s office, which is investigating sea rescue NGOs and charities for allegedly aiding and abetting illegal migration, wiretapped several Italian journalists covering the humanitarian crisis in the central Mediterranean and allegedly exposed their sources.
The investigators’ goal was to find incriminating circumstantial evidence against the NGOs in order to confirm vague suspicions that Jugend Rettet, Save the Children, and Médecins sans Frontières had collaborated with Libyan traffickers.
This is a massive attack on the press by Italian authorities and shows that Italy is waging a ruthless and politically motivated fight against civilian sea rescue NGOs. In doing so, the Italian state respects neither freedom of the press, protection of sources, nor professional secrecy. Together we must defend fundamental rights in Europe and end the policy of foreclosure. Join the Seebrücke local groups!
