16. October 2020 In order of the EU: 60.000 humans displaced in torture facilities and disappeared

Since the beginning of the EU’s cooperation with the so-called Libyan Coast Guard in 2016, which was recruited from militias and is itself involved in human trafficking, the sc Coast Guard has prevented 60,000 people from fleeing across the Mediterranean and returning them to the country of civil war. During this period, the so-called coast guard was equipped with 16 speedboats, among other things, and at least 477 officers were trained within the framework of EUNAVFOR MED Sophia. Since 2017 almost 100 million Euros have been invested in the cooperation.
In a new report, Amnesty International speaks of “unlawful killings, disappearances, torture and other ill-treatment, rape, arbitrary detention, forced labor and exploitation by state and non-state actors” in Libya.
The EU is aware of these crimes, as is the German government. Nevertheless, the cooperation with the so-called Libyan coast guard is considered a success, and the EU Commission, within the framework of its “migration pact”, proposes the expansion of cooperation with third-party states such as Libya and Turkey.
We demand an immediate end to all support for the so-called Libyan coast guard, the evacuation of all people from the Libyan camps and the immediate implementation of a state-financed sea rescue!
