39 people rescued from distress at sea were taken in by Rheinland-Pfalz in 2019. Although six cities in the state have already declared themselves safe harbours, the federal government has still not given permission to enforce its decisions on the additional admission of people rescued at sea. Anne Spiegel, the Integration Commissioner of Rheinland-Pfalz, also supports the initiative of the safe harbours and calls for more communal options.
Not just standing by and watching, but becoming safe harbours and taking responsibility: that is important to us too. Every person deserves to be rescued from distress at sea. The Federal Ministry of the Interior must stop blocking the cities’ willingness to help. Municipal reception must not remain a declaration of intent, but must become concrete help.
