Many thanks to everyone who took part in our campaign “EKD (evangelical church Germany) send a Ship! Because today we say: “Yay, the church sends a ship!”
The Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) has indeed decided to send an additional ship to the Mediterranean to save drowning people. An association is now being founded for this purpose.
This great decision was announced by Bishop Bedford-Strohm, President of the EKD Council, at a joint press conference on 12 September with representatives of rescue and aid organisations, local authorities and the SEEBRÜCKE. The balance sheet was clear from all sides: Politic is failing in view of the current situation in Libya and the Mediterranean. Even after the agreement reached today in Malta, the demands formulated by municipalities and civil society remain valid! More than 90 municipalities have declared themselves Safe Harbours. They must be given the opportunity to voluntarily accept additional refugees.
All people must have the right to move freely and safely! Let us continue to stand up together for this right!
